We will touch on three disciplines of science this year. We will kick off our fall term with biology, the study of life on earth, plant and animal biology moving on to microorganisms, plants, animals, genes, inheritance and the human body. We will start at the beginning, how the complex ecosystem of earth starts with the basic cell. Our winter term will be all about experimenting with chemistry. We will do weekly labs exploring the chemistry in the world about us. We learn about what causes chemical reactions, compounds, acids, bases, the use of chemistry in medicine and the chemical make up of our environment. For the spring term we will dive into the geological makeup of the planet we live on. Why does the earth quake? What are rocks made of? What creates the shape of our planet? We will observe how biology, and chemistry effect support and coexist with the geology of our planet. Students will discover how geology and the study of geology is a part of our everyday life and the development of our modern world. Students will use the scientific method to ask questions, seek answers and discover the world around them. Each term students will keep a journal to ask questions, document their experiments and note their findings and solutions. Students will practice note taking, categorizing, forming hypotheses, experimenting, proving theories and documenting findings.
